A tale of a Cockney lass who makes good.Lizzie is by turns shy and cheeky, but is bright enough to take advantage of any help that comes her way. She buys food from the market with her mother at the start, people buying daily because they were often paid daily. She comes down with TB from the cold, miserable winters and has to stay in a sanatorium. When war starts Lizzie is working and the air raids frighten everyone, but they sit in the damp Anderson shelter and wait them out. As her brothers are called up and all the men go to war, Lizzie volunteers to do war work and becomes a clippie - a bus conductress.
After the war Lizzie marries a soldier she has met, called Charlie, and they live in a house which she wisely bought during the latter war years when property was cheap.
The pair go on to buy a guesthouse and follow that by one hotel after another in the West Country, buying, doing up, learning, selling and moving on. For me that was a slow part of the book because after the first guesthouse all the properties blurred into one another and even properties they viewed but did not buy were described in detail, seeming like padding.
More inportantly Lizzie never loses touch with her friends and family and returns to London at intervals, always getting a great Cockney welcome, helping to run an old people's Christmas dinner and party, showing us a tremendous sense of community. The best of the book is at the start and that is where it returns.
I have read more by this author and her later books incorporate more personal strife and family interaction. This was her first, based loosely on details of her own life.
Other tales of London during the War include Down Stepney Way and Over Bethnal Green.
