I’m beyond appalled; I’m beyond mortified. I’m infuriated that my tax dollars were spent on this program. What am I so riled up about? The FBI’s COINTELPRO program. One of its victims was Fred Hampton. The title of the book under review accurately sums up what the book is about. It’s about an assassinaton carried out by the Chicago police and the FBI. This is not an appropriate police action!Hampton’s early years are captured in a couple of chapters. The book begins to get serious when Hampton becomes an activist, first with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, then with the NAACP. Hampton had an energetic and rousing speaking style, and captured the interest of Black Panther Don Williamson. Hampton joined the Black Panthers shortly afterwards.
The author of this book was the attorney for the surviving tenants of the 12/4 raid, so he has an authentic and authoritative voice. After the raid was found to have been instigated by the police, the original defendants then became *plaintiffs* against the shooters and the charging DA.
The book is exceptionally well-written. I became crestafallen when I realized the narrator was a lawyer; I expected turgid prose, but I was very surprised to find an author with such a plain and straightforward style. Sometimes, however, his prose is not up to the drama he is writing about.
The book cuts a broad swath and provides an insider’s view of all the action. The book no doubt is already stored in the African-American History section, of libraries and bookstores, but it so much deserves a broader audience. People need to realize what’s being done with their tax dollars. Only we can put a stop to this kind of prosecutorial misconduct.

The Assassination of Fred Hampton How the FBI and the Chicago Police Murdered a Black Panther Jeffrey Haas 9781556527654 Books Reviews
I'll be the first to admit that one's like or dislike of this book may have a lot to do with his/her political views. As for me, I loved the book. This was a story that needed to be told and tell it did Jeffrey Haas.
When the discussion of assassinations comes up the main names mentioned are JFK, MLK, and Malcolm X. Sadly, there were many more, better disguised assassinations that happened during the 60's that lots of people have never heard of. Fred Hampton was one of them. Although Fred Hampton's murder caused outrage amongst some in Chicago, it didn't register as largely on the national scale.
Not only did this story need to be told, it needed to be told by someone connected to it who could provide information not readily available. The author, Jeffrey Haas, was the main attorney going after the State Attorney, Hanrahan and the Chicago PD after the fateful morning of December 4, 1969. When he failed to get an indictment he then proceeded to present a civil rights suit against the city of Chicago, Cook County and the FBI. He doggedly pursued to reveal the slaying and the subsequent cover up for 13 years. While reading this book I only paused to catch my breath or to calm down from the fury and anger I had towards the FBI, the Chicago PD, the State Attorney, Judge Perry and the lap dog attorneys representing the perpetrators. This book will elicit strong emotions if you have any kind of passion for justice.
Jeffery Haas tells this story in the simplest and truest form. This book wouldn't be confused with an Edgar Allen Poe piece known for literary genius but it was compelling none the less. There is little biographical information about Fred Hampton as he was killed at the young age of 21. I would say that there is more biographical information about Jeffrey Haas than Fred Hampton yet it doesn't detract from the story at all.
I couldn't help but notice parallels between this story and that of Geronimo Pratt. Both were Black Panther Party leaders, both wronged, FBI involvement, local law enforcement involvement, massive cover up, pit bull like Jewish lawyers dedicating years to right the wrong. If anyone has read "Last Man Standing" then the similarities are eery. In fact, Geronimo Pratt's and Fred Hampton's families are from Louisiana as well.
I'm so glad this book was written and I'm equally pleased that I got a chance to read it. Whether you liked the Black Panther Party or not, whether you agreed with their rhetoric or not, murder is murder and then to lie and cover it up is almost just as abhorrent. This book was an excellent account, it would have been so nice to see what Fred Hampton could have become.
Fred Hampton would’ve been an influential national figure had the police not assassinated him. About 65% of this book is devoted to detailing the raid and the subsequent trials. It is riveting and exposes the depth of corruption law enforcement will employ and how to the system will protect them. To anyone who thinks this is a thing of the past, don’t forget about Snowden’s leaks. The only reason the public is aware of cointelpro or the survelliance of America’s own citizens is because someone leaked it. What haven’t they told you?
The other 35% is a memoir that covers everything from other legal cases to the author’s love life. It adds some humanity in places, but it’s a stark contrast to the taunt legal tale, so it seems to drag in places, not really due to the writing. The subjects are just so dissimilar it is a jarring contrast in some junctures.
All in all, recommended. 4 stars.
If you think that the government doesn't conspire to monitor and kill certain type of people then this book will change your mind. This is a timely book and is definitely worth reading especially today with the BLM and protests that are happening against police brutality. It's very detailed and a huge history lesson about government cover-ups, you think Snowden was the first, well he wasn't. People risked their lives to inform us about the lies of the Vietnam war and COINTELPRO.
Buy this book, read it and learn what they didn't want to teach you in school.
What can I say? But that this is one of the most phenomenal books I have ever read on a civil rights activist. The blatant disregard of justice on behalf of our government and state authorities is highlighted beautifully. Unfortunately, this book also brings to light that even in my time, as a young woman very aware of racial issues, these issues continue. It’s almost like nothing has changed. It truly makes you wonder. Also though, it’s extremely well written and addresses Freds life as well as the author’s in a perfect balance. What happened to Fred Hampton was a downright injustice and the authors fight is only a fragment of what his death meant to the black community. Incredible read and I highly suggest it. “Power to the people.”
